How to Use Your Home Wi-Fi During Power Outages

When scheduled or emergency power outages become frequent in Ukraine, internet access remains one of the most essential things. That is why many users are looking for ways to ensure their Wi-Fi router works reliably even in the dark, according to Glavred.

How to Connect a Wi-Fi Router to a Power Bank

  1. Select the connection type. Find out what type of internet connection you have—cable or fiber-optic. If it’s fiber-optic service, most providers have their own backup power sources, so the signal won’t go out even during a power outage.
  2. Check the router’s technical specifications. There is a sticker with the specifications on the device’s casing. The “Input ” line specifies the operating voltage—usually 5, 9, or 12 V. You need to know this specification in order to choose the right cable.
  3. Prepare the appropriate cable. Purchase a USB cable with an adapter for your voltage (for example, 9V or 12V). You can easily find these adapters at online electronics stores or in the gadget sections of stores.
  4. Connect the router. Unplug the standard power adapter from the outlet, connect the new cable with the adapter to the router, and plug the other end into the power bank’s USB port. In a few seconds, the device will turn on, and you’ll be able to use your home Wi-Fi even without electricity.

How long will the router run on a power bank?

Battery life depends on the battery capacity. For example, a 30,000 mAh power bank can power a router for up to two days continuously. If the device uses less energy, its operating time may be even longer.

Therefore, during power outages, it’s a good idea to have a high-quality power bank and the appropriate cable on hand—this will allow you to stay connected, receive important information, and maintain online communication even without power.
