Within the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, volunteers and animal caretakers have observed an unusual phenomenon—the appearance of dogs with bright blue fur. Representatives of the volunteer initiative “Dogs of Chernobyl” have released a video showing several packs of animals with unusual coat colors. According to them, just a week ago these dogs had their normal coat color, so experts are now trying to catch a few of them for a veterinary examination and to analyze the possible causes of the color change. The Daily Mail reports this.
Currently, there are approximately 700 stray dogs living in the exclusion zone, and volunteers are caring for them—providing them with food and basic medical care. The animals are descendants of domestic dogs that were abandoned when residents were evacuated in 1986. Over the decades, they have adapted to life amid high levels of radiation and a lack of human care.
Scientists are continuing to study these populations to determine exactly how a polluted environment affects their genetics. Recent DNA analyses have identified more than 400 unique genetic markers associated with increased resistance to toxic conditions. Some of them are likely caused by long-term exposure to radiation and are inherited.
Experts speculate that the blue tint in the wool may be linked to chemical compounds in the soil or traces of industrial waste, but they do not rule out the possibility of a natural mutation. Further laboratory studies will help determine whether this phenomenon is the result of external factors or genetic adaptation.
The findings from the study of Chernobyl dogs could provide valuable data for science—in particular, regarding how living organisms are able to survive under conditions of prolonged radiation contamination. This could serve as a foundation for future research in ecology, genetics, and evolutionary biology.
