A return to the Zone is just around the corner. The first major story expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl will be released on August 20, 2026. The DLC, titled “Cost of Hope,” will be available on three platforms at once—PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
The expansion is being developed by the Ukrainian studio GSC Game World, which is part of the ARS Capital holding company owned by businessman Maksym Krippa. Players can look forward to a new chapter in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe that will expand upon the events of the main game and send them back to explore the dangerous territories of the Chornobyl Zone.
The new DLC will expand the game map and add areas that were previously inaccessible. Among them are the Iron Forest and the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Each of these large zones will feature its own hub, surrounded by numerous smaller locations. Players can expect new quests, activities, and events, and according to the developers, it will take several dozen hours to fully complete the expansion.
An important part of the new story will be yet another escalation of the conflict between Duty and Freedom. The journey deep into the Zone won’t be limited to exploring new territories—players will have to navigate the latest round of the confrontation between the two factions.
Along with the release date announcement, GSC Game World unveiled a new trailer for “Cost of Hope”. The trailer features locations familiar to fans of the series, but in a new context. In particular, the developers showcased the fourth reactor unit of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the SIRCAA research institute, and the famous “Arc” near Chornobyl. The centerpiece is a structure that, in reality, was destroyed during the 1986 accident.
So, on August 20, stalkers will have to head back to a place where every step could mark the beginning of a new story—this time, even closer to the very heart of the Zone.
The Skif returns, and the Zone is preparing new challenges
Skif—the protagonist of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl—will reappear in the “Cost of Hope” storyline. The events of this expansion will unfold in parallel with the main events of the game’s second installment. It all begins with a mysterious signal the hero receives on his PSC. From that moment on, Skif will find himself drawn into a new and dangerous story that will lead him to previously inaccessible corners of the Zone.
The developers promise a separate, large-scale storyline, new territories, characters, enemies, and allies, as well as additional weapons. Completing the campaign will take dozens of hours, and the player’s choices will matter not only for individual episodes—the decisions made will influence the further development of the story and the fate of the Zone itself.
The Debt and the Will will once again play a significant role in the plot. These factions, familiar to fans of the series, will once again find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict. At the same time, the expansion’s trailers already suggest that GSC Game World has prepared another narrative element well-known to series veterans—games with consciousness and the perception of reality. This theme is particularly reminiscent of the approaches used in “Shadow of Chornobyl”, so fans of the first trilogy may find plenty of interesting references and familiar motifs here.
It seems that “Cost of Hope” is aimed not only at those who have come to love S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, but also at longtime fans of the franchise. Given its scale and the amount of new content, the expansion could become one of the most significant chapters in the history of the modern Zone.
The price of the DLC has not yet been announced. However, owners of the Ultimate Edition won’t have to purchase it separately—the expansion will be included in the edition at no additional cost.
A major update will be released along with the DLC
On August 20, alongside the release of “Cost of Hope,” GSC Game World will release Update 2.0 for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. The patch will be more than just another set of fixes: the game will be upgraded to a newer version of Unreal Engine 5, and along with that, the developers will add new content, implement numerous technical and gameplay improvements, and fix remaining issues in the game.
Update 2.0 will be free for all S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 owners.
The studio plans to reveal more details about “Cost of Hope” and Update 2.0 over the coming weeks. So, ahead of the August 20 release, it seems GSC Game World still has a few surprises in store for stalkers.
