The U.S. Is Developing a Space-Based System to Destroy Hypersonic Missiles: What Is Known About the New Initiative

Lockheed Martin, an American corporation and one of the leaders in the U.S. defense industry, is working on testing a new space-based interceptor capable of destroying hypersonic missiles directly from Earth orbit. This ambitious project is part of a large-scale program to create a global missile defense system called Golden Dome, which the Pentagon is actively developing.

This was reported by the American analytical publication Defense One, which specializes in security and defense technology.

As part of this program, Lockheed Martin plans to conduct the first demonstration test of an interceptor satellite as early as 2028. The latest system is expected to be capable of neutralizing hypersonic threats using a variety of technologies, ranging from high-precision kinetic strikes to energy weapons—in particular, combat lasers.

Although the concept of using space to intercept enemy missiles has been under discussion since the 1980s — dating back to the Reagan administration’s so-called “Star Wars” program — these initiatives have remained merely on paper to this day due to their enormous cost. But the situation has changed.

In light of the rapid expansion of hypersonic capabilities in Russia and China, the United States has found itself needing to strengthen its own defense capabilities. Hypersonic missiles are capable of reaching speeds five or more times the speed of sound, and their trajectories are difficult to predict and track. This makes them extremely difficult targets for traditional air defense systems. That is precisely why there was a need to develop a new-generation defense architecture, particularly in space.

At the same time, Lockheed Martin is forced to compete for government contracts with other influential players, including Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The latter has a significant advantage in that it allows satellites to be launched into orbit more quickly and at a lower cost. However, Lockheed is banking on a comprehensive approach—that is, on integrating space platforms with air, sea, and ground systems into a single defense infrastructure.

The company notes that implementing the Golden Dome initiative requires the combined efforts of several market players. Due to the scale and complexity of the project, it cannot be carried out by a single organization alone. As a result, Lockheed Martin is actively collaborating with other companies and organizations that possess the necessary technologies and resources.

This project could serve not only as a response to new threats, but also as a significant step toward the future of global security, where space is becoming yet another arena of defense competition.
